National Board Certified teacher Mrs. Lorandini teaches math at Carle Place Middle–High School where she has been teaching since 2001. Prior to coming to Carle Place Caryl taught in Malverna, Elmont, and Fresh Meadows. She has worked on many NYSED committees since 2005, including the Mathematics Curriculum Committee, Math Content Advisory Panel, NYSED Standard setting, PARCC Panel, Item review and Next Generation Math Standards. She has served as an Executive Board Member of AMTNYS since 2003 and was the 68th President of AMTNYS. She has served on the Executive Board of LIMACON, NCMTA and NCAMS. Caryl has shared her expertise with educators by speaking at local, state and National conferences.

Among the many awards and accolades. Caryl Lorandini received, she has been the recipient of the Godreau Award for Educational Leadership, SUNY-CW Alumni Award for Excellence in Education, NCMTA Distinguished Service Award, NCMTA Middle School Teacher of the Year, AMTNYS Distinguished Service Award, Limacon Leadership Award, is a member of the Long Island Mathematics Educators Hall of Fame, and is a graduate of the NYS Master Teacher Program. She is the author of EZ-Guide to Pre-Algebra: the Easy Way by Kaplan. Caryl Lorandini earned her BS in Elementary Education from SUNY College at Old Westbury, and MS from Long Island University–CW Post. Mrs. Lorandini holds certification in both Elementary and Mathematics Education. Throughout her years of teaching, Mrs. Lorandini has found inspiration in her family, students and coworkers, as well as has a deep love of teaching and learning.

Mr. Kalish taught math at Syosset High School in NY for 42 years. Prior to coming to Syosset he taught at Junior HS 185 in Queens, NY. Throughout his career he has taught as an adjunct instructor for the College of New Rochelle, Brooklyn College, and at SUNY Old Westbury. Currently he is the Director of The Institute of MERIT (Mathematics Education, Research, and Instructional Technology). The Institute governs The Institute of Problem Solving for Gifted and Talented Students in grades 5 – 10, a Research and Technology class, and a Robotics Engineering program. Mr. Kalish is on the Advisory Council for MoMath, the National Museum of Mathematics, in NYC. He is also on the Advisory Board for Limaçon, the Long Island Mathematics Conference. Mr. Kalish is the Problem Writing Committee Chief for MOEMS®.

Dorothy Hess received her Bachelors and Masters degrees from Brooklyn College, where her love of math was cultivated. Since college she has been involved in math. She began her career teaching in New York City in 1966. She is now retired from the Malverne School District where she taught math and computers at the middle school level from 1979 to 2001. During her years in Malverne she was a Math Olympiad PICO. While teaching in Malverne, she received the honor of being recognized as their Teacher of the Year. She has received an Educational Leadership Award from the Goudreau Museum of Mathematics and is a member of the Long Island Mathematics Educators Hall of Fame.Dorothy served as a math research consultant on Square One, a math television show sponsored by Childrens’ Television Workshop. She was Middle School Representative for the Association of Math Teachers of NYS, and continues to serve in the Assembly. Dorothy is past president of Nassau County Math Teachers Association and has been an active member of the Executive Board since 1984. She co-chaired the Nassau County Teachers and Supervisors annual conference How To Make Math Count for teachers grades K-8, for over 25 years and continues to be a consultant for that conference. Dorothy Hess is director of conferences for MOEMS®. She handles all arrangements for the exhibits and is an enthusiastic and energetic leader for the Math Olympiad team at conferences around the country.

Laurie Boswell taught all levels K-16 over her 40+ year career. Her first teaching position was at Profile School in Bethlehem, NH where she coached the middle and high school mathematics teams. She spent sabbatical years at the University of New Hampshire and Plymouth State University. Laurie finished her teaching career at The Riverside School in Lyndonville, VT where she also served at the Head of School.

Dr. Boswell has held many leadership positions including president of the New Hampshire Teachers of Mathematics and president of the Council of Presidential Awardees in Mathematics. She is a former member of the board of directors of the National Council of Teaches of Mathematics and regional director of the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics. She has co-authored more than 40 mathematics textbooks, kindergarten to Algebra 2.

Dr. Boswell earned her B.S. in Mathematics and M.Ed. in Mathematics Education from Plymouth State University and her doctorate in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies from the University of Vermont.

Frederick L. Dillon is a mathematics specialist and coach, having worked with the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the Institute for Learning (University of Pittsburgh) among others. Fred was a classroom teacher for 35 years for the Strongsville City Schools where he taught both junior high and high school and became the mathematics department chair at the high school. Fred is a past member of the Board of Directors for the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics  and is a former officer for both the Ohio Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the Greater Cleveland Council of Teachers of Mathematics.  Currently, Fred is a trustee for the Mathematics Education Trust and is part of the writing team for an update of NCTM’s Focal Points documents. 

Among Fred’s recognitions are Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching, the American Star of Teaching, the Tandy Award, the Christofferson-Fawcett Award for lifetime contribution to mathematics education in Ohio, and several state and local awards for outstanding teaching and leadership. Fred also received the Most Influential Educator Award from Strongsville High School students seven times, and award selected by students. Fred publications include co-authoring of Your Mathematics Standards Companion, High School: What They Mean and How to Teach Them, and of NCTM’s Principles to Actions: Ensuring Mathematical Success for All, Taking Action: Implementing Effective Mathematics Teaching Practices in Grades 9 – 12 and Discovering Lessons for the Common Core State Standards in Grades 9-12 and articles and pages for NCTM journals. Fred recently co-authored The Common Core Mathematics Companion: The Standards Decoded, High School which completes Corwin’s bestselling K-12 mathematics series.

Linda M Fulmore is a former secondary mathematics teacher and school administrator. She enjoyed a 2nd career with Solution Tree, leading mathematics professional learning in schools and districts throughout the United States. She holds a B.S. degree from Ball State University, a M.S. degree from Indiana University and EdD from Northern Arizona University.

Dr. Fulmore is a past-president of TODOS: Mathematics for ALL and served in various other offices for over 20 years of service to the organization. She also served on the NCSM Leadership in Mathematics Education Board for over 10 years, in the positions of Secretary, 1st and 2nd Vice-President, on various writing teams, and Position Papers Editor. In 2019 she was honored to receive the NCSM Kay Gilliland Equity Lecture Award.

Spanning a 15-year period, Linda enjoyed numerous NCTM appointments, including various standing and program committees, The Equity Summit, the Achievement Gap Task Force, editorial panels, and the Mathematics Education Trust Board.

She recently completed tenure on the Arizona Math Collaborative Task Force that crafted recommendations for AZ, K-12 through post-secondary mathematical pathways. In 2017, she received the AZ Golden Apple Award for Outstanding Leadership in Mathematics Education.

 Currently, Linda continues a life of service with involvement on community and philanthropic boards in the Phoenix, AZ area.

Karen Karp is a professor in the School of Education at Johns Hopkins University. Previously, Dr. Karp was a distinguished teaching professor of elementary mathematics education at the University of Louisville. Her scholarship focuses on the intersection of mathematics education and special education. She is the author or co-author of 23 book chapters, 52 articles, and 41 books, including the recent U.S. Department of Education Institute of Science’s What Works Clearinghouse Practice Guide on Assisting Students Struggling with Mathematics: Intervention in the Elementary Grades, and other titles such as Strengths-based Teaching and Learning in Mathematics: 5 Teaching Turnarounds for Grades K-6, The Math Pact: Achieving Instructional Coherence within and Across Grades, and Elementary and Middle School Mathematics: Teaching Developmentally.

Dr. Karp is a former member of the board of directors of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and a former president of the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators. Recently she won the Lifetime Achievement Award for Distinguished Service to Mathematics Education from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. She also is a member of the U.S. National Commission on Mathematics Instruction. She holds teaching/administrative certifications in elementary education, secondary mathematics, K-12 special education, and educational administration.

Now a retired teacher, Joanne Lufrano has more than 25 years of experience teaching elementary school students and providing math staff development for teachers and administrators.

She has served as the Board President of the Valley Stream Teacher Center and as its Assistant Director. She has been an active member of the Executive Boards of both the Nassau County Mathematics Teachers Association and the Association of Math Teachers of New York State. She also serves on the board of  Collaboration Education, a volunteer organization that provides expert tutoring, mentoring and enrichment to economically disadvantaged, academically struggling K-12 students. She is a Past President of the Nassau County Math Teachers Association and has been inducted into the Long Island Mathematics Educators Hall of Fame. Joanne currently serves as an adjunct professor at Hofstra University as well as continuing her many years of work as an educational math consultant since her retirement from the Valley Stream 30 School District on Long Island.

Jim Matthews has been a faculty member at Siena College for over 30 years. At Siena, he teaches mathematics, computer science, and courses for the education department including supervision of student teachers
Prior to joining the faculty at Siena he was a secondary mathematics teacher in Chatham, NY and he has taught mathematics for over ten years in Kindergarten through 4th grade classrooms. He has also worked as a consultant for many school districts and educational associations, the majority of this work for urban and rural schools.

Jim has given hundreds of conference presentations and written articles based on ideas for improving the teaching of mathematics and computer science. He has conducted numerous workshops for mathematics educators, directed and consulted on many grant projects, and helped establish undergraduate and graduate programs for mathematics and science teachers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Jim has served on and chaired committees for the New York State Education Department. He is an active member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the Association of Mathematics Teachers of New York State, and the Seaway Section of the Mathematical Association of America. He has served on committees and boards for all of these organizations including a term as President of the Association of Mathematics Teachers of New York State.

Jim has been recognized with a NYNEX award for Excellence in Education and with the Siena College Teaching Award and was an inaugural inductee into the New York State Mathematics Educators Hall of Fame. He was also the back-up keynote speaker for President Obama. When not working, Jim likes to run, bike, hike, and ski. He also enjoys puzzles and games, magic, reading, and hanging out with his friends and family.

Associate Professor of Mathematics at Arkansas State University, Retired

Suzanne Mitchell, NCSM President 2011-2013 and board member for 7 years, is an associate professor of mathematics at Arkansas State University, the Executive Director of the Arkansas STEM Coalition, and a former program officer for the Improving Teacher Quality program at the Arkansas Department of Higher Education.

This long time math educator spent half a century in the classroom teaching mathematics at both the secondary level in Arkansas and Missouri and at the college level at Arkansas State University. She served as the mathematics coordinator for six years in the Pulaski County Special School District in Little Rock, Arkansas, four years as the mathematics and science coordinator for the magnet school program in the Kansas City, MO school district, after which returning to Arkansas to build a state-wide mathematics professional development program known as the Arkansas Math Crusade.

She served as a member of many national groups including the Arkansas Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the Arkansas Association of Mathematics Leaders, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the College Board, the National Science Teachers Association, and the National Alliance of State Mathematics and Science Coalitions. She also served on the Board of the Triangle Coalition for Science and Technology Education for ten years serving one year as President. Under her leadership, Arkansas created and developed 12 university STEM Centers located throughout Arkansas that include 54 state-supported mathematics and science specialist positions at the Centers.

Dr. Mitchell earned an Education Specialist degree in Administration and a PhD in Education and Urban Policy Studies in Education from the University of Missouri, Kansas, a Masters degree in Education with an emphasis in Secondary Mathematics from the University of Arkansas and a BS degree in Mathematics from Arkansas State University.

BOARD MEMBER, WEB MASTER, PROGRAMMER, AND MEDIA SPECIALIST (1985 – 2021)

Former math and computer teacher at Valley Stream South High School in Valley Stream (1969-2008). He taught virtually every Math course and every level there from Math 7 through Advanced Algebra. When computers arrived in Valley Stream, Dennis began designing and teaching courses involving the computer.

For 25 years, Dennis Mulhearn spent his summers teaching Math & Computers in Valley Stream’s summer school programs. And for another 10 years, Dennis spent his after school time teaching in the private yeshiva Mesivta Ateres Yaakov in Elmont and Hewlett, NY

Along the way, he has moderated VS South’s Computer Club, Computerletes team, Chess Club, and It’s Academic team.

Teachers have taken a number of in-service courses with Dennis, and many have participated in problem solving workshops led by Dennis.

He had worked with Math Olympiads from the mid 1980’s through 2021. He had maintained the organization's data and programs and written additional programs when needed.

Assistant Principal, Long Island School for the Gifted, Huntington Station, NY

Cheryl Novick is the assistant head of school/ math chair at The Long Island School for the Gifted where she has taught since 1982. Prior to that, she taught math at East Junior High School in Brentwood. As a long time PICO, Ms Novick has inspired countless students in problem solving. Cheryl has been a member of the executive board of the Suffolk County Math Teachers Association for more than 35 years.

She is an instructor in The Institute of Problem Solving for Gifted and Talented Students since its inception. She has received an Educational Leadership Award from the Goudreau Museum of Mathematics. Cheryl Novick received both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Mathematics from SUNY University at Stony Brook.

Former Board Member – National Council of Teachers of Mathematics

Dr. Mark Saul is the Executive Director of the Julia Robinson Math Festival (JRMF), a program of the American Institute of Mathematics. JRMF runs non-competitive after-school events in which students engage cooperatively in solving non-standard mathematical problems and activities. These festivals have reached thousands of students in 25 states and 6 foreign countries.

Before this, Saul worked as Director of Competitions for the Mathematical Association of America, which runs the largest math contest program in the country. He directed the Center for Mathematical Talent at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, New York University, a program that reaches out to local NY City schools with math enrichment. 

Mark has been a senior scholar for the John Templeton Foundation, guiding their portfolio in gifted education. Dr. Saul was a program officer for the National Science Foundation, where his portfolio included programs in mathematics curriculum, in teacher professional development, and the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. He is a 1984 recipient of that award. Dr. Saul is also a member of the New York State Mathematics Educators Hall of Fame.

While teaching, Saul directed the Research Science Institute at MIT for twelve years. Internationally, he co-directed the AAAS Olympiad program, which brought US students from minority backgrounds to the Pan-African Mathematics Olympiad and similar olympiads in Latin America. He initiated a student exchange program between Russian and American students, as well as an “Intel/Westinghouse” style competition for students of mathematics in China. He has given talks and led workshops in more than 20 countries, including Russia, Bulgaria, China, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and India. He served as President of the American Regions Mathematics League, mathematics field editor of Quantum (the English-language version of the Russian journal Kvant), a board member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and a member of the Mathematical Sciences Education Board for the National Research Council. He has done curriculum development with the Educational Development Center and developed an internship program for high-ability students in Shanghai. His publications include numerous articles and 14 books. Among them is an elementary text on trigonometry, co-authored with I.M. Gelfand, a translation and ‘reader’s companion’ for Jacques Hadamard’s Elementary Geometry, and “The Peak in the Middle”, a guide for work with mathematically gifted middle school students, published by NCTM. His most recent volume, written with Titu Andreescu for the American Mathematical Society, is about algebraic inequalities, leading students from very ordinary classroom fare to Olympiad-level problems in incremental steps. 

Dr. Saul graduated from PS 121 and Junior High School 135 in the Bronx, then from the Bronx High School of Science. He received his BA from Columbia University and his Ph.D. from NYU. He then spent 35 years in and around New York, teaching mathematics in classrooms from grades 3 through 12.

Dr. Christopher C. Jett is an Associate Professor of Mathematics Education at Georgia State University where he has been working since 2022. There, he serves as the Program Coordinator for the Ph.D. program in Teaching and Learning’s Mathematics Education concentration and teaches graduate seminars as well as methods courses for prospective middle and secondary mathematics teachers. He also currently serves on the Georgia Department of Education’s (GaDOE) Mathematics Advisory Council.

Previously, he spent 2012–2022 as a faculty member in the Department of Mathematics at the University of West Georgia where he taught mathematics content courses for pre-service elementary, middle, and high school teachers. From 2021–2024, he served as a committee member on the U.S. National Commission on Mathematics Instruction, a council under the auspices of the National Academy of Sciences—National Research Council.

Dr. Jett’s research examines the mathematics and racialized experiences of Black boys and men across K–16 contexts. He is the author of Black Male Success in Higher Education: How the Mathematical Brotherhood Empowers a Collegiate Community to Thrive (Teachers College Press, 2022). He is also an award-winning mathematics educator. He received the Outstanding Service as Associate Vice President for Advocacy Award from the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE) in 2024, a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) in 2019, and a National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award in 2016.

Jeanne is one of the Administrative Assistants and has been working at MOEMS® since 1998, making her the most tenured employee. Some of her responsibilities include being in charge of customer invoicing, entering accounts payable and receivable funds in Quickbooks, fulfilling book and spirit item orders, maintaining inventory control, processing of all incoming and outgoing mail including upkeeping and supplying the postage machine with funds and handling all of the bank deposits.

When she is not busy at work, she loves spending her time with her family, especially her two grandchildren.

Dot has been the Administrative Assistant for MOEMS® for over 18 years. Her main responsibilities include enrolling all teams into the computer, then preparing and packing out awards boxes. Answering all emails and phone calls always with a “smile,” creating and shipping all items needed for conferences, and attending conferences on a “as needed” basis, are some of her tasks.

Dot was one of the proofreaders of Math Olympiad Contest Problems Volume 2. In her spare time she enjoys spending time with her 4 grandchildren.

For 31 years, Meryl was a Health and Physical Education teacher at North Side School in East Williston, New York. During that time, she took on many additional roles including teacher mentor, coach: track and field, cross country, and field hockey. She sat on the District’s Instructional Advisory Committee, Educational Advisory Committee and she continues to serve as the Director of the East Williston Teacher Center. Additionally, Meryl held several leadership positions in the East Williston Teachers’ Association: Building Representative, Building Vice President, Secretary, Newsletter Editor, Webmaster, Scholarship Foundation Chairperson, Benefit Fund Trustee, Community Liaison, and Chief Contract Negotiator. For the last ten years Meryl was the President of the Union.

Outside the East Williston Schools, Meryl had served as a Trustee on the Long Island Teachers Benevolent Fund and PAC Chairperson for SD7 in for the New York State United Teachers (NYSUT). 

In 2001 Meryl was named the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (NYSAHPERD) Elementary Physical Education Teacher of the Year. In 2020 Meryl received the prestigious Simmons Award, “dedicated to professionals who have gone beyond the mandates of their implied responsibilities and made a measurable difference in the lives of their students.”
